Learn more about the Sesquicentennial
HISTORY
The Sesquicentennial Commission was created by legislation in 2005. Eight members are legislators, nine members from all over the State are appointed by the Governor. The Commission members were appointed in 2006 and work began in earnest in 2007. The Commission will expire January 30, 2009.
MISSION
The mission of the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission is to: Plan, promote, and oversee events and activities to recognize Minnesota’s 150th anniversary of statehood.*
Goals: The Sesquicentennial Commission and its staff and volunteers will:
- Achieve broad participation of the people of Minnesota, visitors, local communities, institutions and organizations in activities across the state; (Register your events and activities)
- Raise awareness and educate Minnesotans by telling the stories of our past, recognizing the indigenous people of Minnesota, and learning from them and the many ethnic groups that have come and continue to come to Minnesota; (Learn here)
- Develop a shared vision for the state’s future, by engaging Minnesotans in civic dialogue (Plan for Our Future)
- Leave a lasting legacy through print, visual, musical, and other reminders, as well as media documentation;
