Minnesota Tax Laws Question Haiti Donations
Recently the House of Representatives and the Senate passed legislation permitting American citizens and certain corporations to deduct donations to relief in Haiti from their 2009/10 income tax returns. However the Minnesota legislature has not made up their mind on whether to go along with this legislation. Minnesota tax laws do not allow Minnesotans to make contributions in 2010 now from their 2009 return. Hearings on adding this legislation to the Minnesota tax law will take place at the next Minnesota legislative session. It has been suggested that Minnesotans taxpayers may want to hold off on filing their returns until after this matter has been dealt with if they choose to donate to the Haiti relief. The debate has become frustrating for some because they feel that the Minnesota tax law should not differ from federal tax law. This not the only problem that Minnesota tax laws have caused. Last year Minnesota was late in paying over 120 million dollars in corporate tax refunds to over 450 companies. Minnesota Lawyers In a Rock and a Hard Place
The Senate race between incumbent Norm Coleman and democratic challenger Al Franken was not expected to turn out as a task for Minnesota lawyers, but once the race was to close to call Norm Coleman needed a Minnesota lawyer and Al Franken needed a Minnesota lawyer. Both parties claimed that they were the victor and that the opposing side was grasping at straws. All Minnesota lawyers that were involved knew this was going to be a lengthy process. • The Minnesota lawyer for Norm Coleman told the Minnesota Supreme Court that thousands of ballots had not been counted, but when Coleman’s Minnesota lawyer was asked to support that claim with evidence, he was unable to do so. There were several recounts and many court hearings ending at the state supreme court. This process went on for seven months making it the longest senate race in our nation’s history. Minnesotans waited and waited what seemed like forever to see who their other senator would be. • Towards the end of the process it seemed clear that democratic challenger Al Franken was going to be the winner and that the rest of the proceedings were just semantics. Why Can’t Congress Pass Health Care?
Democratic presidents have been trying to pass health care for many years but have failed every time. It seems now that congress is closer than ever in passing reform. The problem in passing reform is usually the republican party who never try to pass reform when they have the majority in congress and always try to block it when the democrats have the majority in congress. The election of Minnesota representative really helped the democratic congress in passing health care. However, the death of Ted Kennedy and the election of Republican Scott Brown made the Minnesota representative’s election not as important as it once was. • In 1994 Bill Clinton tried vigorously pass health care reform, but the republican controlled congress stopped it from happening. Now 16 years later, President Obama has come further than any other president in passing health care reform. A bill has passed both houses of congress but the issue has now come to a halt due to the republican party spewing out false information to the general public, which changed the people’s opinion about the issue. • Minnesota representative Al Franken claimed during his campaign that one of the most important issues to him was … Continue reading
