Join mosaic artist Susan Warner for a December 8th preview of her project commemorating the state sesquicentennial: A wall-size mosaic "travel postcard" from Minnesota.
As the state's 150th anniversary of statehood draws closer, Minneapolis-based mosaic artist Susan Warner is pulling together the pieces for her statewide public art project, a mosaic "travel postcard" from Minnesota, slated to be unveiled at the 2008 State Fair. On December 8th the public can preview the project at the Mississippi Mud Works and Semi Automatic Glass studios in Minneapolis.
The Sesquicentennial Mosaic is titled "Greetings from Minnesota" and will feature a border of tiles, with designs representing each of the 87 counties in the state. Warner will gather suggestions and creative direction from individuals in each county through regional workshops, starting with the December 8th open house.
Permanent installation of the completed mosaic is planned for a location at the State Fairgrounds as a lasting legacy of Minnesota's 150th anniversary of statehood, pending full funding for the project. The Sesquicentennial Commission has contributed $7500 towards the $75,000 cost, which includes outreach and design workshops across the state. The Commission is seeking additional donations to support the project. Warner's previous works encompass installations in both metro and rural locations and she has been an artist-in-residence for several years in many communities across Minnesota.
The preview of the Sesquicentennial mosaic project is part of the 29th annual studio open house at the Mississippi Mud Works and Semi Automatic Glass studios. In addition to concept drawings of postcard project, Warner's mosaic of the State Sesquicentennial logo will be on display. Glass-blowing demonstrations will continue throughout the day and food, wine and egg rolls from Sawatdee will be available.
The event is free and open to the public, December 8th 12 noon to 6p.m.
